Great site! Just decided to look on the web for any info on my grandparents home region and found it all fascinating. My dad got interested too- he could remember my grandparents talking of people mentioned in the stories on this site. I suppose there may be people still local who remember my grandparents, aunts and uncles. Any stories or memories would be interesting to hear of. My grandad moved to Yorkshire with the family in the 60s. His name was Richard (Holmes) and grandma was called Margaret (Wilson), the large family consisted of Richard, David, John, Peter, Paul, James, Helen and Margaret.

Hello, My name is Ann Bland, maiden name Riding. I am researching my family tree, and by means of various censuses, have gained quite a bit of information about the Riding family.  Can anyone tell me where Moorside is?  I would be interested to hear from any Riding still living in the village. My mother, who is almost 95, still lives in the village. My father was Thomas (Tom) Riding, and we used to live in Chapel Lane.
Many thanks in anticipation. Ann Bland, nee Riding.

Dear Sir/Madam

Sorry to bother you but I was wondering of you could help me.  When I was a child I lived at 179 Liverpool Old Road, at the time it was a business called 'Day Old Chicks' or nicknamed 'The Hatchery'.  Adjacent to the house was the site of a windmill.  Im not sure if you are aware but the house was haunted by the old miller.  I can vouch 100% as I saw him several times as did my father, visitors and people who lived across the road.  I was wondering if you have any information on the property as I have searched all over and cant even find it listed anywhere.  A few years back I visited the library an managed to get a photograph but its taken after the sails were dismantled.  The ghost Ily (that's what we nicknamed him) was a friendly one, he just wandered around like he still lived there.  He hated any alterations being done to the house though and I often travel past and I see there has been some serious refurbishment.  I wonder if he caused them any trouble HA HA.  I hope you do have maybe a little information on it, or even of the friendly ghost.

Yours sincerely
 Alexandra Linford

Hi, just having a rare browse through the site, saw folk moaning about lack of parish council minutes.
Av they got something to hide, is asked?
No they haven't.  Come down any time on the meeting nights, you'll be made most welcome.  You could even join in and give your tuppence worth.  Minutes are published a month in arrears to allow them to be approved and signed.  If you can't wait for them on the net, they are on hard copy in the Library.
When the next councillor vacancy comes up, put your name down for it and you too can get something done for the village!

Hi Longton and Andrew! You've made some improvements on here since my first visit last year about this time. But I do miss seeing the coments along side the black and whites of when, where, and what they are of. But, then I'm no website designer and this is one of the best I've seen. Returned to your site while continuing research on grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Foulkes nee.. Lawton of Longton. If anyone livlng in Longton can offer me any information on her parents,William and Elizabeth Lawton an e-mail would be greatly appreciated. Sarah Married in 1896 and emigrated to the US in 1904. William and Elizabeth were born abt.1850. Much thanks to all and have a wonderful day in a beautiful town..it's the kind all us "Yanks" would love to live in.

http://kickme.to/broadbandlongton Register your interest here Hello to everyone, Can you please take time out to register interest in broadband internet at www.btopenworld.com/broadband/reg10 It will explain more about it here. The reason being the Longton telephone exchange has not been upgraded to ADSL, which will provide broadband capabilty. Broadband provides a internet connection up to 40 times faster than a conventional modem. The exchange will only be upgraded to broadband capability when 400 people have registered there interest. Currently only 83 people have registered. The exchange serves Longton, Hutton, Much Hoole, New Longton and Walmer Bridge. With all these villagers being potential broadband subscribers I am hoping to bring to their attention the fact that the exchange has not and will not be upgraded until we have 400 registrants showing a 'potential' interest. Broadband will bring many benefits to the community it serves. Help us all out by taking time out to register and pass this mail onto any other internet users you know in this area (both friends and family) It takes less than 2 minutes and costs nothing to register your interest. We need another 317 people to register their interest. Thanks for your time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Register your interest for Broadband here www.btopenworld.com/broadband/reg10 SORRY FOR THE LONG POST

Longton and Walmer Bridge are beautiful parts of the region. Before the "fat cat" developers destroy them , is there anybody else concerned enough in the future of the villages. Read the articles on traffic calming and other serious issues as these will become major issues in the future. Is it time to stop the rot? The Red Lion is not allowed a playground but the big developers get the rights to the whole area....lets get real.

Just found this interesting site. I was born in Chapel Lane, in December, 1933, the first child of Thomas (Tom) Riding & Elsie Riding. I have a younger sister, Louise and a much younger brother, Tom. I attended Longton Council School from September, 1938 until July, 1945, when I transferred to the Park School in Preston, having passed my Scholarship. I was married in St,Andrews Church in December, 1958, and eventually came South to live, my husband being in the Royal Navy, and posted down here. Sadly, my father died at an early age, in 1961, but mother, who is now 93, lives at Ashwood Court in School Lane, where she has been since it was opened My husband (Mike) and I now live on the Surrey/Hants border, at a place called Ash Vale, near Guildford. We are particularly interested in the history of the village, as we are currently researching our family trees.

Representatives of 16 local charities, village organizations and youth groups recently attended a presentation at the 'Black Bull' public house. They each received a cash donation from the organizers of this year's Village Fete. Following last year's cancellation, the organisation of the 2001 Longton Fete was taken over by the South Ribble Lions Club. Lions Club Treasurere, Geoff Evans, commented that 'thanks to the hard work and generosity of everyone involved, we generated a cash surplus of almost £1,300. All of this money is being donated to community organisations - both to thank them for their help with the Fete and to encourage their work within the Longton community.' The Lions have already set 18th. May 2002 for next year's Longton Fete. If you would like to know more - visit the Lions' website on www.southribblelions.org.uk - or ring Geoff on 611072.

With regard to Teg & L.C.C., they are bound to be getting not only a large grant from the government for have a waste centre in the area, but also will be able to charge Teg high business rates & tax's, so the council are ready to make a lot of money out of it. Only if it happens and they pass it, how long will they keep it, as they have been warned of the side effects and psooibility of ill health etc., so having been warned will face a lot of compensation claims over the years, so would it have been realy worth it, when they will probably be sued for millions. I dont have a great faith in the Council, having a lot of inside info on what they actually waste there money on, in tit for tat with labour v conservative. Lots of money is wasted within the council, so they have to get money from somewhere, never mind anybodys health or well being, they are only in it for themselves.

It is a good feeling to know that there are so many involved in the background with so much knowledge and expertise in the field. We really appreciate the time and effort spent by all involved. My husband and I have written our letters of protest. This though AMAZED ME... The Address of TEG is (according to an e-mail from Andy Holborn on this site) exactly the same address as that of the MP David Borrow at 2 Sandy Lane, Leyland. This is also the address of LCC INFORMATION and the office of Welfare Rights - It is very much a Lancashire County Council address, so why would TEG BE BASED THERE? Has Andy Holborn got it wrong or... are TEG and LCC WORKING TOGETHER? Very odd???

I also attended the meeting last night and was pleased to see such a large turn-out, well done to those who made the effort. As mentioned last night, this potential environmental disaster needs as much support as we can all muster so to all of you out there who can't be bothered or who want to leave it up to others - DON'T - get out there, learn more about this issue, spread the word and help to save our beautiful village and area from these monsters.

This being a Longton site and all, should the advice not be "Avoid drink driving by simply catching first bus of day home after you leave the pub (approx 7.20am)" or was the advice more generic in nature? Remember talking to a Longton landlord around the time all day opening, 11am-11pm came in round about 80's or 90's (can't remember because I thought it impolite not to avail myself of new law). When I asked him what he thought of new laws his reply was " I don't care what they say, I'm not cutting my hours down for anyone" This is true and he meant it. Answers on a postcard please. I am researching the Wilkins family of Longton. In particular trying to establish maiden name of Thomas Wilkins wife who was called Ellen. I believe Ellen was born c1776 and died 25 May 1850. They had the following children: Margaret, William, John, Thomas, Christiana, Richard, Henry and Alice from 1805 to 1820. I have tried to find details of the marriage around 1804 without success. Any information would be welcome.

Last saw him about 3 years ago when I went for a trip back to England. He was always in the Red Lion (sometimes working in there). Then he got his own milk round. If anyone reads this and knows him, can you please give him my email address (above). It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! P.S. Great Site
