Hello,
I kindly request your help in my search for the relatives (or friends who knew him etc)of late Joseph BAGGALEY from Longton. ( via the websiteof the CWGC I found he was the son of Joseph and Evelyn BAGGALEY).Sergeant Joseph BAGGALEY died in Germany on November 6th 1944 when his Lancaster was shot down. One of his fellow crew members who died also was Flgt Serg Emile AMEYE, a Belgian who joined the RAFVR. His next of
kin are friends of mine and asked me to search to get in touch with the relatives of the other crewmembers. For they have absolutely no information on the wartime period of Emile.
So, if anyone can help us we would be pleased. Thanks and many greetings from Belgium,
Philip GELDHOF

I suggested back in March that perhaps the parish council would consider funding some duck signs on Marsh Lane. After some promising sounding emails it turned out that the signs were put up on Moss Lane New Longton. Could the parish council raise this issue again?

Hi there I am a first time visitor to the web site. I was born in Longton in 1956, went to Longton Country Primary and then Penwortham Girls Grammar until the family left to live in South Africa. I was then 16 and my sister, Carol, then 15. Our surname was Love and we lived for a few early years in Highfield Drive but spent most of our lives in Chapel Lane, right opposite the old and the new Rams Head! I see that there is a message on the site from David and Sharon in Johannesburg – I would very much like to get in touch with you. To anyone else who reads this message and remembers me – please drop me an email to s.hembling@mweb.co.za. I recently returned to Longton for a short break to see my family: Colin and Juanita Love and Norah Love. It was a wonderful experience and Longton, despite all the development, is beautiful. Best wishes Sandra

Reading the minutes of Parish meetings, there are frequent complaints about gangs of teenagers gathering in the village. Having asked around, there appears to be little or no facilities for young people in the village and as I grew up here in Longton myself,  I understand that boredom and there being 'nowhere to go' can be problematic for teenagers, their parents and residents in such a rural area. Are there any plans to set up a youth club or some kind of facilities for teenagers to use in the village, especially during wintertime? I would be interested in helping to make this happen, if it isn't happening already.

Looking for lost relatives.  My Great-Grandmother was Laura Jane Evans b: Sept. 17, 1886 at 6 Boundary Side, Longton. She came to America in 1910. If there is anyone out there who may know more information about the family, I would greatly appreciate some guidance. Otherwise, I am looking for references regarding information about Longton in the late1880s- to early 1900s including industry, weather, population, and housing.  Thank you for any help given

As part of an on-going project on local war memorials, I have three pages of German text that needs to be translated to English.  It concerns a local man who was killed in W.W.2.  Is there anyone in the village who would oblige so that it can be included in the file?

Regarding Steve Johnson's remarks on the 'traffic calming measures', it has been a long campaign by local residents and the Parish Council that has been brought up directly to County Hall, and with support from the Area Committee of S.R.B.C. and County Cllr Keith Young.  They were allegedly put in by Redrow without any so-called Highways consultation as part of their planning application.  From day one they have been a problem, by over-egging the solution to the problems on the road.  There are people who travel too fast on Chapel Lane.   However Steve's enthusiasm has to be curtailed slightly in that only half the bollards will go, the long one will remain and one will be re-sited.  A digital speed indicator will be sited near the Chapel Park Road end in the hope that it will slow down those people who continue to speed.  The parish council did ask for a complete resurface of Chapel Lane but I think what we'll get is bigger patches to cover up the multitude of little patches that currently exist.  Father Christmas doesn't always bring everything you ask for.  The white lines should be repainted soon.
It's a pity that the five-figure sum to remove them couldn't have been better spent.  Redrow paid for the installation but the tax-payers will have to fund the removal.  Should be some kind of lesson there somewhere!

Following the previous reports about the removal by B.T. of the telephone box on Shirley Lane, they also tried to do away with the one outside the Post Office.  Following objections by the Parish Council, they have now changed their minds and it will remain in place.Unfortunately, both boxes (the other one opposite the Red Lion) have been the target of mindless vandals smashing the windows in the boxes recently.  I would ask anyone with any Information of the culprits to please pass it on to the Police.

She had no reason to sell his sepia portrait I can make a copy for this person I only wish to know what happened to the other 2 lesser awards

SEARCHING FOR RELATIVE: I would greatly appreciate any information anyone could give me about Derek Hoskins; I have been searching online for some time, and finally came across a Derek C. Hoskins who lived in Longton, Lancashire.  He would be my great uncle; my grandmother Nora was a WWII war bride and moved to the United States in 1946; Derek was her younger brother, and was married to Mavis Hoskins.
If anyone can help me with this, I would be greatly appreciative.
Thank You,

Every spring a number of ducks become road casualties on Marsh Lane particularly near to Ravenscroft Nursing Home. Would the parish council consider funding road signs to warn of the presence of ducks? I have seen duck signs on Tom Benson Way at Cottam

The road names on the Redrow estate were named after headmasters at the old school in School Lane. Mr Pendlebury was the 1st headmaster there, and Messrs Rymer & Bamford were subsequent headmasters, the other roads in the Redrow Estate other than Pendlebury are called Rymer Grove & Bamford Fold........

I write on behalf of Country Markets Ltd. (formerly Longton W.I. Market) with regard to trying to recruit new members who could bake or grow produce for our market.  The market is run as a co-operative on a profit making basis.  We open on a Friday at 10.30am - 11.45am. at the W.I. Hall on School Lane, Longton.  The market closes in December and opens again on 11th March 2005.
All the baked produce we sell is home made and freezable (a real taste of the past!)  We would also invite any new prospective customers to come and sample our produce.  We have a plant stall too, so all you gardeners can come and see what we have to offer.  Coffee, tea and cakes are also available.  Hope to see you there.  Debbie Robertson

I live on Pendlebury Close in Longton and read with interest a 2001 Parish Council minute whereby the decision was taken to name roads on the new development. It states that the eventual names were arrived at following some historical investigative work. Redrow informs me that the connection is the former school, but who or what were Pendlebury and Rymer? Many thanks
Pendlebury was one of the founding teachers of the school that occupied the land  the redrow development is built on. I think rymer was the a teacher also - if anyone can confirm this please email Andrew
