Hi, Just had another nostalgic visit to Longton on your website where I lived in the 70s, the last time I did a post was in the Red Lion guestbook a number of years ago, which was interesting to say the least at times!. I used to live down Franklands and both my husband and daughter went to St Andrews School for a while at some stage in their school lives, I did correspond with you Andrew on a couple of occasions and loved the stories that I think your mum wrote I think I still have a copy of them somewhere, are they on this website? I cracked up when I read someone had mentioned little Tommy Tush he was such a character he used to sit on a seat across from the Rams, I think it was outside a building waiting for opening time,   I was a barmaid there for a number of years, loved the nights when the coaches called in on the way from Blackpool to Liverpool we always had a good band on, but hated cleaning up the morning after especially the mens - you always found false teeth in the grid in the urinal when I hosed the toilets out with the fire hose (only thing that would clean it up!) and sometimes someone would ring up and ask if we had found any, "sure did" old Ernie would say, and when they called to collect them they were all together in a plastic bag, and without a smile on my face I used to say "take your pick" there were top sets and bottom sets or both it was my highlight of the cleaning up - boy there used to be such a mess left! there used to 25 - 30 coaches squashed in the carpark sometimes!
No doubt it is very quiet now that the ring road takes all the traffic to Blackpool.
Well, thats a bit of my nostalgia of Longton!. Love the websight

Hello, I am researching my maternal grandfather, James Meehan.  We was a tailor in Longton from 1918  until his death in 1925.  I know he worked for  Sutton's Tailor shop.  Is this Tailor shop still conducting business? I noticed Stewart McLoughlin's entry in this Guestbook.  He was kind enough to locate my grandfather's burial site last year.  I would like to place a gravestone but so far, I have been unable to find out any information about James'  birthplace (or birthdate) in Ireland.  It is my hope that if Sutton's Tailor shop is still in business, they may have retained records of where James received his apprenticeship in tailoring. I am in San Antonio, Texas.

Hello I like many people came across your website while researching my family tree.
I come from Staffordshire and believed that there was only one longton. I was researching my family and could not find any birth records for Emma Barnes, her birth place was stated as longton and being from staffs thought that it was the longton in my local area. however i now believe that she came from your longton. she was born in 1866 and her mothers maiden name i think was kirkham, unfortunately i can't find any census information so if anyone has any information perhaps even a census address i would be most grateful. Thank you

Hi Andrew,  Thanks for your reply and best regards to your mum. Tell her i remember her uncle Giles very well he used to run with his dog Ginger down Caddies Croft every morning, they have since invented jogging. Ido not wish to become a nuisance contributor but because the discovery  of your website has given me so much pleasure and brought back so many forgoten memories ( How could anybody forget Tommy Tush ) soi thought if i liested some names from my last year at Longton Council School it may bring back some happy memories to others.
Betty Banks,  Kathleen Wells, Helen Hunter, Muriel Hamilton, Audrey Bell, Jane Dewhurst, Jean Pickles Kathleen Wright, Joan Wright, Joan Atkinson, Margeret Vaughen, Norman Harrison, George Tuson, Ron Waring, Roy Tilling,  Arthur Collins, George Baxendale, JIim Sutcliffe, John Bond, Charles Eastham, Keith Hogg, Tom Blackett, Fred Cairnes, John Rouse, Jack Wrigh,t Peter Heyes, Reg Crookhall, Dennis Croasdale.  I left school in December1942.
And just two more memory joggers
1  The nine o clock shunt.  This was the goods train that arrived at Longton Bridge every evening to collect empty rail trucks. During this operation the driver sounded his hooter and in the summer months lots of us kids were told to come home off the rec when we heard the whistle.
2) Anyone remember those magnificient Shire Stallions owned by Dick Sutton as they were taken by their grooms to and from Longton Bridge.

I stumbled upon your website today it is great it took me back to the place where i spent the happiest time of my life.  The 1935  article was great i knew every person mentioned in it.   I am Jack Moxham  we lived at Fylde Cottage on Liverpool Road.  I used to deliver milk round the village for Nick Sutton of Park Farm i stated when i was ten years old(1938)  and when i left school at 14 i worked at Park Farm for 9 years.  All the girls in the Folk Dance team mentioned in the article were in my class at Longton Council School.  HAPPY DAYS

Hi There,
I have just found out that my father Lawrence Bond the car designer, was born in Longton.  His father was Frederick Charles Bond and mother was Margaret Bond nee Morphy.  My father was born in 1907 and it is rather unlikely that anyone is still around who knew the family, but if there is any record of their existence please could you email me with it? I long to learn more about them.
Thank you so much for your time.

Longton Hoodies appear to have grown up at last, although it can't have been easy for them never really sure if mummy was going to pick them up from the Spar or if they might have to make the 5 minute walk home alone...

The 'new bridge' was referred too at the recent SRBC Western Parishes Area Committee and a stumbling block highlighted.  The proposal is for a FIXED bridge, which could interfere with the navigation of the River Douglas and would therefore possibly be illegal, apart from the interference to river traffic.  Could be a bit of mileage before it is built, but by then the LCC would have committed your council tax to something that could never happen.  Has someone not seen the wood for the trees here?

I have just heard that a new bridge over the River Douglas is being proposed by a Lancashire County Council etc organisation and a Royal Institute of British Architects competition for the design has been launched. Don't get too excited because it is not to carry road traffic, but apparently would be a foot/cycle/bridleway bridge. I still think it sounds very interesting
The route proposed is the old railway line bridge over the Douglas. The bridge itself no longer exists but the end points are still there to see where the new bridge would be, approximately Altys at Hesketh Bank and the far end of Haunders Lane Little Hoole (near St Michaels) at our side.
Fuller details are on the website www.heskethbank.com/news

This March I am collecting photos of Longton’s middle class chavs. The type that hang around Booths and Spar of an evening trying to look like a chav but get dropped off and picked up by their Mothers in Volvos and Mercs. Kids trying to look like they are more suited to Preston bus station but still enjoy skiing holidays and riding their ponies at weekends.
The photos can be anything that relates to our home grown chav wannabes, whether it’s a car with a load of plastic stuck to it and a bad paint job or a guy in a hoodie and baseball cap combo.

All entries can be e-mailed to dontinventit@live.co.uk.

The winner will be chosen mid April for which you will receive a great big didly squat.

Please remember it is just for fun

Dear Jean, How are you doing? My name is Joe Walker, I am retired and living in San Antonio, Texas.
I was researching Longton Lancs, when I came across your article. I personally want to thank you for your memories, as they made such interesting reading.
I was researching Longton because I have 2 photos of Family gatherings circa 1924-1926, On the back of one of the photos it said Fred Russell Photographer,
Rams Head Hotel, Longton, Lancs .
I have tried to find a picture of the Rams Head without any success as I wanted to confirm the location. The big question is why would my grandparents and extended family all want to go to Longton at this time? Possibly it was because my mothers cousin MALCOLM BRADY was in training to become a jockey. I say this because you mentioned horses and horse racing. Possibly the family went to visit him? If you think that I am barking up the wrong tree please let me know! Possibly the Rams Head was the attraction. I would appreciate any ideas which you might have. Love and thanks from Texas, Joe Walker PS Funny enough when my mother married my dad she became [Veronica] Ronnnie nee JonesWalker.JWDW
